Sagging Gutters
Older gutters often sag because years ago contractors used big spike nails to nail the gutter through the front and back of the gutter into the fascia board. Because the metal constantly expands and contracts, over time the gutters literally pull the spikes out, weakening the whole gutter system. Unfortunately, some contractors still use those spikes instead of inside hidden gutter hangers, which should be screwed into the fascia board instead of nailed. Gutter replacement is usually necessary to correct this problem. On newer sagging gutters it is sometimes possible to install inside hidden hangers to reinforce and re-pitch them.
Storm Damage
Storm damage, which usually occurs when falling objects, such as branches and trees, crush gutters during storms. Sometimes during rain storms, gutter spikes will push out when the gutters are full and weighed down with water. In the winter, lesser quality gutter screws can also snap under the weight of ice or snow. For safety reasons especially, corrective action should be taken as soon as possible.

Damaged Downspouts
Downspouts serve the important function of moving water collected by gutters away from the foundation and should always be repaired in a timely manner. Usually just the dented or crushed section of the downspout must be replaced, which is relatedly inexpensive.
Gutter Holding Water - Improper gutter Slope
This can be the result of improperly installed gutters that don’t pitch enough so the water doesn’t flow toward the downspout. It can also be the result of sagging gutters, which were nailed to the fascia board with gutter spikes, or perhaps hidden hangers were used but they were nailed rather than screwed in. Re-pitching the gutters and reinforcing them with inside hidden hangers and proper screws can typically fix this.
Normal Wear and Tear
After about 20 years, aluminum and copper gutters typically begin to develop pinholes due to oxidation. When it rains, water drips from gutters that appear to be in good condition. Gutter replacement is the only solution.
